Somatropin Axis

Meaning

The Somatropin Axis, more commonly known as the Growth Hormone/Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (GH/IGF-1) axis, is a central neuroendocrine cascade that regulates somatic growth, cellular proliferation, and metabolic function throughout the lifespan. It involves the hypothalamic release of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH), the pituitary secretion of Growth Hormone (GH, or Somatropin), and the subsequent liver production of IGF-1. This axis is paramount for maintaining lean body mass, bone density, and metabolic homeostasis.
