Somatotropic Cascade

Meaning

The Somatotropic Cascade describes the sequential endocrine signaling pathway initiated by the hypothalamus and culminating in the systemic actions of Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). This critical axis begins with the release of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) and is counter-regulated by somatostatin. The cascade is essential for regulating growth, body composition, cellular repair, and metabolic function throughout the lifespan. Disruptions in this tightly controlled sequence are associated with both growth disorders and age-related functional decline.
