Somatotropic Axis Responsiveness

Meaning

The functional sensitivity and capacity of the pituitary gland to release Growth Hormone (GH) and the target tissues, particularly the liver, to respond to GH by producing Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). High responsiveness indicates a robust and efficient system essential for tissue repair, metabolism, and maintaining youthful body composition. Decline in this responsiveness is a key feature of aging, clinically referred to as somatopause.
