Somatotropic Axis Impairment

Meaning

Somatotropic Axis Impairment refers to a dysfunction anywhere along the hypothalamic-pituitary-liver axis that controls the production and action of Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1). This impairment can manifest as reduced GH secretion from the pituitary, decreased IGF-1 synthesis in the liver, or diminished tissue responsiveness to these hormones. Clinically, this is recognized as Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) in adults, leading to adverse changes in body composition, metabolic profile, and quality of life. Restoration of function in this axis is a key goal in hormonal health.
