Somatotropic Axis Function

Meaning

The complex neuroendocrine pathway involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and liver, which is responsible for the regulation of growth, metabolism, and body composition throughout the lifespan. This axis is primarily defined by the pulsatile secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) from the pituitary and the subsequent production of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) from the liver. Its function declines with age, a condition termed somatopause.
