Somatotrophs

Meaning

Somatotrophs are the collective population of specialized acidophilic cells residing in the anterior pituitary gland, which are the exclusive source of Growth Hormone (GH), or Somatotropin, production and secretion. These cells are paramount for regulating somatic development, maintaining metabolic homeostasis, and preserving lean body mass and bone density across the entire human lifespan. Their collective, pulsatile function is central to the integrity of the somatotropic axis.
