Somatotroph Secretion

Meaning

Somatotroph secretion refers to the pulsatile release of Growth Hormone (GH) from the somatotroph cells located within the anterior pituitary gland. This neuroendocrine process is tightly regulated by the opposing actions of hypothalamic hormones: Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH), which stimulates release, and somatostatin, which inhibits it. The pattern and magnitude of this secretion are critical determinants of the body’s overall anabolic state, influencing tissue growth, metabolic function, and body composition. Age-related decline in this secretion is a hallmark of somatopause.
