Somatotroph Function

Meaning

The physiological activity of the somatotroph cells, which are a specialized population of acidophil cells located in the anterior pituitary gland responsible for the synthesis and pulsatile secretion of Growth Hormone (GH). Optimal somatotroph function is essential for regulating growth during childhood, and in adulthood, for maintaining lean body mass, bone density, and metabolic homeostasis. Age-related decline in this function, known as somatopause, is a significant contributor to the physiological changes associated with aging. Clinical assessment focuses on the amplitude and frequency of GH pulses.
