Somatostatin Modulation

Meaning

Somatostatin modulation refers to the physiological or clinical adjustment of the activity or circulating concentration of the peptide hormone somatostatin, also known as growth hormone-inhibiting hormone (GHIH). This powerful regulatory peptide acts as a universal inhibitor, suppressing the secretion of numerous other key hormones, including growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. Therapeutic modulation, frequently achieved through the use of long-acting synthetic analogs, is employed to manage hormone-secreting tumors or to control excessive hormone production states.
