Somatostatin Analogue

Meaning

A Somatostatin Analogue (SSA) is a synthetic peptide drug designed to mimic the action of the naturally occurring hypothalamic hormone somatostatin, which is a potent inhibitor of various endocrine and exocrine secretions. Clinically, SSAs are primarily used to treat neuroendocrine tumors and conditions characterized by excessive hormone secretion, such as acromegaly (excess growth hormone) and Cushing’s disease (excess ACTH). These pharmacological agents offer a targeted approach to suppress pathological hypersecretion and manage associated symptoms.
