Somatostatin Activity

Meaning

The collective biological functions mediated by the peptide hormone somatostatin (SST), which acts as a potent, broad-spectrum inhibitory regulator of endocrine and exocrine secretions throughout the body. Somatostatin activity primarily involves the suppression of growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and various gastrointestinal hormones like gastrin and insulin. Clinically, synthetic analogs are used to manage hormone-secreting tumors or to control symptoms of acromegaly and neuroendocrine tumors.
