Somatopause Reversal Protocols are clinical regimens designed to counteract the age-related decline in the production and secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) and its downstream mediator, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), a condition known as somatopause. The objective is to restore the somatotropic axis to a more youthful functional capacity, thereby improving body composition, bone mineral density, and overall metabolic health. These protocols are a cornerstone of regenerative endocrinology.
Origin
The term “Somatopause” was coined to describe the progressive, inevitable decrease in GH and IGF-1 levels that occurs with aging, mirroring the concept of menopause and andropause. The “Reversal Protocols” emerged from the therapeutic application of Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy (GHRT) and later, Growth Hormone Secretagogues (GHSs), to mitigate the associated symptoms of this hormonal decline.
Mechanism
Reversal is primarily achieved by administering Growth Hormone Secretagogues (GHSs), which stimulate the pituitary gland to release endogenous GH in a pulsatile, physiological manner, avoiding the continuous supraphysiological levels associated with exogenous GH. This increased GH then stimulates the liver to produce IGF-1. The combined action promotes lipolysis, enhances protein synthesis, and supports tissue repair by binding to receptors in muscle, bone, and adipose tissue, effectively resetting the anabolic drive.
