Somatopause Definition

Meaning

Somatopause is the clinical term describing the progressive, age-related decline in the secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) and its downstream mediator, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), leading to a state of relative GH deficiency in adulthood. This physiological change contributes to several age-related alterations, including reduced lean body mass, increased visceral adiposity, and diminished bone mineral density. The severity of the somatopause is often exacerbated by poor sleep quality, as the majority of GH release is nocturnal. This decline is a universal component of biological aging.
