Somatic Functional Decline

Meaning

Somatic Functional Decline describes the progressive, age-related deterioration of non-reproductive, non-germline cells and tissues throughout the body, resulting in a measurable loss of physiological capacity and physical resilience. This decline is characterized by reduced muscle mass, known as sarcopenia, decreased bone density, and impaired organ system performance. In the hormonal context, it is intrinsically linked to the age-related reduction in anabolic hormone production and increased systemic inflammation. Addressing this decline is central to extending healthspan and maintaining functional independence.
