Soluble Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator

Meaning

Soluble Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator (suPAR) is a circulating biomarker that represents a cleaved, non-membrane-bound fragment of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR). While the membrane-bound receptor is involved in cell migration and tissue remodeling, the soluble form is recognized as a systemic indicator of chronic immune activation, low-grade inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Clinically, elevated suPAR levels are associated with increased risk and poor prognosis across a wide range of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, renal, and infectious conditions. It provides a measurable signal of underlying physiological stress.
