Soluble Adhesion Molecules

Meaning

A class of cell-surface glycoproteins, such as sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1, that are cleaved from the endothelial cell surface and released into the bloodstream, where they can be measured as circulating biomarkers. These molecules are essential for mediating the adhesion of leukocytes to the vascular endothelium, a foundational step in the inflammatory process and the initiation of atherosclerosis. Elevated levels of soluble adhesion molecules in the plasma are considered a clinical indicator of endothelial dysfunction and systemic vascular inflammation.
