Solar Lentigines

Meaning

Solar lentigines are benign, circumscribed pigmented macules, commonly known as liver spots or age spots, that appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the face, hands, and décolletage. Histologically, they are characterized by a localized proliferation of melanocytes and an increased accumulation of melanin in the basal layer of the epidermis. They are a definitive clinical marker of cumulative photodamage.
