Sodium Retention

Meaning

Sodium retention is the physiological process where the kidneys increase the reabsorption of sodium ions from the renal filtrate back into the systemic circulation, often leading to an increase in extracellular fluid volume. This process is tightly regulated by the endocrine system, particularly the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone, and is a key factor in the regulation of blood volume and arterial blood pressure. Excessive sodium retention can contribute to hypertension and peripheral edema.
