Sodium Reabsorption

Meaning

Sodium reabsorption is the critical physiological process by which the renal tubules reclaim filtered sodium ions from the tubular fluid back into the bloodstream, thereby playing a central role in maintaining fluid volume, blood pressure, and overall electrolyte balance. This process is highly regulated and is responsible for recovering the vast majority of the sodium initially filtered by the glomerulus. The efficiency and magnitude of sodium reabsorption are directly controlled by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and other regulatory hormones.
