Sodium-Potassium ATPase

Meaning

An essential integral membrane protein enzyme, often referred to as the Na+/K+-pump, found in the plasma membrane of virtually all animal cells. This electrogenic pump actively transports three sodium ions (Na+) out of the cell and two potassium ions (K+) into the cell for every molecule of ATP hydrolyzed. It is critically responsible for establishing and maintaining the electrochemical gradients necessary for nerve impulse transmission, nutrient transport, and cellular volume regulation.
