Sodium Balance

Meaning

Sodium balance is the highly precise physiological process of regulating the total amount of sodium ions ($text{Na}^+$) contained within the body, a process that is fundamentally critical for maintaining plasma volume, regulating cellular osmotic pressure, and ensuring stable blood pressure homeostasis. The body achieves this balance by tightly controlling the intake of sodium, primarily through dietary consumption, and its subsequent excretion, which is mainly executed by the renal system. Significant disruptions in this delicate balance can lead to serious clinical sequelae, including generalized edema, refractory hypertension, or dangerous hypovolemia.
