SOCS Proteins

Meaning

SOCS proteins, or Suppressors of Cytokine Signaling proteins, are a family of intracellular proteins that function as critical negative feedback regulators of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, which is utilized by numerous cytokines and hormones, including leptin and growth hormone. These proteins act as a brake on excessive or prolonged signaling, playing an essential role in preventing chronic inflammation and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Clinically, their dysregulation is implicated in conditions like leptin resistance and chronic inflammatory states, highlighting their importance in metabolic and hormonal balance.
