Sleep Staging Architecture

Meaning

Sleep Staging Architecture refers to the precise, cyclical pattern and proportional distribution of the different phases of sleep—Wake, N1, N2, N3 (Deep/Slow-Wave Sleep), and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep—throughout a nocturnal period. This architecture is a fundamental biomarker of brain health, hormonal regulation, and overall physiological recovery. Disruption in this architecture, such as reduced N3 or fragmented REM, is strongly correlated with metabolic dysfunction and chronic stress.
