Sleep Spindles and Memory refers to the critical, functional relationship between brief, high-frequency bursts of brain activity, known as sleep spindles, and the process of memory consolidation that occurs during non-REM sleep. These distinct electroencephalography (EEG) events are thought to facilitate the transfer of newly acquired information from the hippocampus to the neocortex for long-term storage. The density and frequency of these spindles are directly correlated with an individual’s capacity for learning and retention.
