Sleep Patterns

Meaning

Sleep Patterns refer to the recurring, cyclical organization of an individual’s sleep architecture, encompassing the timing, duration, and sequential progression through the distinct stages of non-REM (NREM) and REM sleep. These patterns are fundamentally governed by the interplay of the homeostatic sleep drive and the circadian rhythm, which is largely regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the hormone melatonin. Optimal patterns ensure sufficient time in restorative deep sleep and dreaming sleep, which are critical for metabolic regulation, immune function, and neurocognitive health. Significant deviation from a stable pattern can indicate underlying hormonal or neurological dysregulation.
