Sleep Decline

Meaning

Sleep decline refers to a measurable reduction in the quality, quantity, or restorative capacity of sleep over an extended period. This phenomenon often manifests as decreased total sleep time, increased sleep latency, frequent nocturnal awakenings, or a diminished proportion of deep and REM sleep stages, deviating from an individual’s healthy baseline. It is a persistent state, distinguishing it from transient sleep disturbances, and represents a chronic insufficiency or disruption of physiological sleep processes.
