Sleep Debt

Meaning

Sleep debt, or sleep deficit, is the cumulative difference between the amount of sleep an individual requires for optimal cognitive and physiological function and the amount of sleep they actually obtain. This deficit is not easily erased by a single night of extended sleep; chronic sleep restriction results in a sustained, negative impact on neuroendocrine function, metabolic regulation, and immune competence. Minimizing sleep debt is a non-negotiable foundation for hormonal health, metabolic stability, and overall wellness.
