Sleep Architecture Staging

Meaning

Sleep Architecture Staging is the clinical process of systematically classifying and quantifying the distinct physiological stages of sleep, including Wake, N1, N2, Slow-Wave Sleep (SWS or N3), and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, based on polysomnographic data. This staging provides a detailed, time-based map of the sleep cycle, allowing clinicians to diagnose sleep disorders and accurately assess the quality and restorative capacity of an individual’s sleep. The proportion, sequence, and continuity of these stages are critical indicators of hormonal balance and neurological health.
