Sleep Apnea Severity

Meaning

A clinical classification that quantifies the degree of respiratory disturbance during sleep, typically measured by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), which is the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour of sleep. Severity ranges from mild to severe, with higher AHI scores indicating more frequent episodes of breathing cessation or shallow breathing. This metric is crucial for determining treatment necessity and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions. Increased severity is strongly linked to endocrine dysfunction, including reduced growth hormone and testosterone secretion.
