Sleep and Willpower

Meaning

Sleep and Willpower describes the direct physiological relationship where the capacity for self-control, sustained attention, and rational decision-making—collectively termed willpower—is fundamentally dependent on the quality and duration of prior sleep. Willpower is not a limitless mental resource but a function of a well-rested, metabolically supported prefrontal cortex. Deprived sleep significantly erodes this executive capacity.
