Skin Lipid Profile

Meaning

The specific qualitative and quantitative composition of the various lipid classes, including ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids, and triglycerides, that are present within the epidermis and on the skin surface. This profile is essential for forming the highly structured lamellar bilayers of the stratum corneum, which constitute the primary permeability barrier of the skin. An optimal skin lipid profile is a clinical indicator of robust barrier function and minimized transepidermal water loss.
