Skeletal Muscle Wasting

Meaning

Skeletal muscle wasting is the involuntary loss of muscle mass, strength, and function, a debilitating condition often associated with chronic disease, aging (sarcopenia), or severe hormonal deficiencies. This catabolic state is characterized by a net negative balance between muscle protein synthesis and degradation, leading to significant functional impairment and reduced quality of life. In endocrinology, it is a key feature of conditions like hypogonadism and severe growth hormone deficiency, often requiring therapeutic intervention.
