Skeletal Metabolism

Meaning

Skeletal Metabolism refers to the dynamic, continuous process of bone remodeling, which is the coordinated interplay between bone-forming cells, osteoblasts, and bone-resorbing cells, osteoclasts, that maintains bone strength, repairs micro-damage, and regulates systemic mineral homeostasis. This process ensures that the skeleton remains a metabolically active and adaptable organ throughout the lifespan. It is profoundly regulated by systemic hormonal factors, including parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and the sex steroids, which are essential for maintaining calcium balance and structural integrity.
