Skeletal Fragility

Meaning

Skeletal fragility is a clinical condition characterized by compromised bone strength, leading to an increased susceptibility to fractures from minimal trauma or even spontaneously. This fragility is not solely defined by low bone mineral density (BMD), but also encompasses adverse changes in bone quality, including microarchitecture deterioration, altered bone turnover, and accumulated microdamage. It is a critical health concern, particularly in the aging population and in individuals with endocrine disorders like hypogonadism or hyperparathyroidism. Assessing fracture risk requires a comprehensive evaluation of both density and bone quality parameters.
