Skeletal Development

Meaning

Skeletal development is the intricate biological process encompassing the formation, growth, maturation, and continuous remodeling of the human skeleton from embryonic life through adulthood, establishing the structural framework of the body. This complex process involves both endochondral and intramembranous ossification, resulting in the formation of cartilage and bone tissue, respectively. Optimal skeletal development is critically dependent on the tightly regulated interplay of calcium homeostasis, mechanical loading, and a multitude of systemic hormones, including growth hormone, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and sex steroids.
