Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography

Meaning

Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a nuclear medicine tomographic imaging technique that utilizes gamma rays emitted by an injected radiotracer to create three-dimensional functional images of internal organs and systems. In the context of hormonal health, SPECT is occasionally used to assess the functional activity of endocrine glands, such as the thyroid or adrenal glands, or to evaluate regional cerebral blood flow which is often affected by hormonal imbalances. It provides functional, rather than purely anatomical, information.
