SIBO

Meaning

SIBO, an acronym for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, is a clinical disorder defined by an abnormally high concentration and/or altered type of bacteria in the small intestine, a region typically characterized by a low microbial load. This overgrowth leads to the premature fermentation of ingested carbohydrates, resulting in significant gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. SIBO can also cause malabsorption and subsequent nutritional deficiencies, thereby impacting overall hormonal and metabolic health.
