Shift Work

Meaning

Shift work is an occupational arrangement characterized by working hours that fall outside the conventional daytime schedule, often involving evening, night, or rotating shifts. This work pattern is a significant chronobiological stressor, as it forces the individual to override their natural, endogenous circadian rhythm. Clinically, chronic shift work is associated with an increased risk of metabolic dysregulation, sleep disorders, and hormonal imbalance, including suppressed melatonin and altered cortisol profiles. It represents a misalignment between the internal biological clock and external environmental demands.
