Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Meaning

Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) is a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of insomnia or excessive sleepiness that are directly attributable to a work schedule requiring non-traditional hours, such as night shifts or rapidly rotating shifts. This clinical disorder results from a chronic, forced misalignment between the individual’s endogenous biological circadian clock, which dictates the timing of sleep and wakefulness, and the external work-schedule demands. The disorder carries significant metabolic and hormonal health implications beyond simple fatigue.
