Shift Work Physiology

Meaning

Shift work physiology refers to the study of the biological and physiological consequences experienced by individuals whose work schedules deviate significantly from the conventional daytime pattern, particularly those working rotating or permanent night shifts. This field examines how the human body’s intrinsic circadian system attempts to adapt to or is disrupted by these non-standard light and activity cues. Chronic misalignment in shift work is recognized clinically as a significant risk factor for metabolic, cardiovascular, and hormonal disorders.
