Shear Stress

Meaning

Shear stress refers to the tangential force exerted by a flowing fluid, such as blood, on the surface of a solid boundary, like the endothelial lining of a blood vessel. This mechanical force acts parallel to the vessel wall, distinct from pressure which acts perpendicularly. It represents the friction or drag experienced by the vascular endothelium due to blood flow dynamics, playing a critical role in maintaining vascular health.
