SHBG Synthesis

Meaning

SHBG synthesis is the biological process of creating Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, a glycoprotein predominantly produced and secreted by the liver into the bloodstream. This protein functions as the primary transport vehicle for circulating sex hormones, including testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol, binding them with high affinity. The rate of SHBG synthesis directly determines the concentration of free, biologically active hormones, thus playing a pivotal role in regulating the bioavailability of sex steroids. Alterations in SHBG synthesis are a key factor in conditions like PCOS, hyperthyroidism, and androgen deficiency.
