SHBG Polymorphisms

Meaning

SHBG Polymorphisms refer to common variations in the DNA sequence of the gene that codes for Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG), resulting in structural or regulatory differences in the protein. These genetic variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), can influence the rate of SHBG synthesis in the liver, alter the protein’s binding affinity for sex hormones, or affect its circulating concentration in the bloodstream. Since SHBG controls the amount of free, biologically active testosterone and estrogen, these polymorphisms have clinical relevance in conditions linked to sex hormone bioavailability, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or prostate cancer risk.
