SHBG Polymorphism

Meaning

SHBG Polymorphism refers to the existence of variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), in the gene that codes for Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG), a glycoprotein primarily synthesized in the liver. These genetic variations can influence the circulating concentration of SHBG or alter its binding affinity for sex steroid hormones, such as testosterone and estradiol. Since SHBG regulates the amount of free, biologically active hormone available to tissues, a polymorphism can significantly impact an individual’s effective hormonal status and their susceptibility to various endocrine-related conditions. Clinical interpretation of total hormone levels must account for these potential genetic influences on SHBG.
