SHBG Modulation

Meaning

SHBG Modulation refers to the clinical or physiological process of influencing the circulating concentration or activity of Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), a glycoprotein primarily synthesized in the liver that binds and transports sex steroids, specifically testosterone and estradiol. Because SHBG-bound hormones are largely biologically inactive, modulating its level is a key strategy for altering the ratio of bound to free, or bioavailable, sex hormones. This intervention is often employed in hormonal health management to increase the amount of free hormone available to target tissues, thereby impacting androgenicity, estrogenicity, and overall sex hormone balance.
