SHBG Levels

Meaning

SHBG Levels refer to the quantifiable concentration of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, a glycoprotein synthesized primarily by the liver, circulating in the blood. This protein has the crucial physiological role of binding sex steroids, such as testosterone and estradiol, thereby regulating the amount of biologically active, or ‘free,’ hormone available to target tissues. Low or high SHBG levels directly impact the perceived hormonal status of an individual, irrespective of total hormone measurements. Monitoring this is essential for accurate endocrine assessment.
