SHBG Interpretation

Meaning

SHBG interpretation is the clinical process of evaluating the concentration of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, a glycoprotein synthesized by the liver, to accurately determine the biologically active, free fraction of sex steroids like testosterone and estradiol. High SHBG levels reduce the amount of free hormone available to tissues, potentially leading to symptoms of deficiency despite normal total hormone levels, while low SHBG can indicate an excess of bioavailable hormone. Proper interpretation is therefore crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of androgen and estrogen imbalances.
