SHBG Hormone Measurement

Meaning

SHBG Hormone Measurement is the clinical quantification of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, a glycoprotein synthesized primarily by the liver that transports sex steroids, including testosterone and estradiol, in the bloodstream. The measurement is critical because SHBG binds these hormones with high affinity, rendering them biologically inactive while bound. Therefore, the SHBG level dictates the amount of “free” or bioavailable hormone, which is the fraction capable of interacting with target cell receptors. Clinicians use this measurement in conjunction with total hormone levels to accurately assess a patient’s true endocrine status and functional hormonal availability.
