SHBG Genetic Regulation

Meaning

SHBG Genetic Regulation describes the control of the production and circulating levels of Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) through an individual’s inherited genetic blueprint, specifically the gene SHBG on chromosome 17. Genetic variations, such as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) within this gene or its regulatory regions, can significantly influence the basal concentration of this plasma protein. Since SHBG binds and inactivates sex steroids, its genetically determined level is a major factor in determining the amount of bioavailable, or free, hormone available to target tissues.
