SHBG Gene Polymorphisms

Meaning

Naturally occurring variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), within the gene that codes for Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG), a glycoprotein primarily synthesized in the liver that transports sex steroids like testosterone and estradiol in the blood. These genetic variations can alter the expression level or the binding affinity of the SHBG protein, leading to inter-individual differences in the concentration of bioavailable, or free, sex hormones. Understanding these polymorphisms is critical for personalizing hormone replacement therapy.
